I need to start this by saying this is a combination of speculation, wishful thinking, and a bit of stubbornness on my part. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is coming soon, and there is a great deal of secrecy surrounding the big villain of the movie. She’s being played by Sadie Sink, of Stranger Things. Her role has not been confirmed. The major speculation seems to be that she’s playing Jean Grey. I disagree. Every character confirmed for this movie (with one big green exception) is a street-level character. Jean Grey is generally present in stories that go in different directions than street-level crimefighting. There is another character in the Marvel Universe that does many of the things Jean Grey does. If you know comics, and the title of this post means anything to you, you’ve figured out who I think the character will be: Mary Walker, aka Bloody Mary, aka Mutant Zero, aka…
…Typhoid Mary
Here’s what we know from the trailers:
and that’s the bulk of it. While some of those aspects are things that can be attributed to Jean Grey, all of those things are in Typhoid Mary’s wheelhouse. Now, every character in the movie, minus Dr. Banner, has interacted with Mary in the past, including The Hand (see Monday’s post). Much of what we see in the trailers has shown the Hulk losing control and getting into dangerous situations. What if that’s the Bloody Mary persona taking over the Hulk and going on a rampage of her own?
It’s also worth mentioning that in the comics Mary has at times been closely associated with The Hand (again, see Monday). In Shadowland, she leads them alongside Daredevil. Now, given her mind control abilities, could she be controlling The Hand herself by possessing a number of them? Is there the possibility that Daredevil shows up?
It’s with all this in mind that today we present Mary Walker. This is very much like the Typhoid Mary datafile in Breakout, with a few notable exceptions. Most notably is the Possession Relay SFX. It makes her very dangerous, especially when paired with the Developing Madness SFX. An ability that causes Mental Stress, and then a power boost that keys off of her Mental Stress. You have been warned.

All of this is to say, I would be very excited to see Mary as the villain in this movie, perhaps less so if it’s actually Jean Grey. There’s also the possibility that they blend the two, and Jean Grey has more of the attitude of Typhoid Mary. I don’t know how I feel about that. In all honesty, I don’t really care what characters appear in a Marvel movie if it turns out to be good, and Spider-Man hasn’t really let me down yet. If it’s Jean, and the movie is great, I will stuff popcorn in my mouth and say no more.
But what if I’m right? Can you imagine what that would be like? Actually, today, you can. Here’s the datafile that gets you there.
