Hero Datafile: Gwen Stacy, Spider-Woman

tumblr_n6vhofzumd1qzv8loo1_500Spider-Verse week continues with our first datafile, Gwen Stacy, Spider-Woman, affectionately known as Spider-Gwen. Though she’s appeared only in a single issue of her own, and a minor character in the Spider-Verse storyline, she’s become so popular she’ll be getting her own series in April!

In this alternate universe (Earth-65), Gwen Stacy was bitten by the radioactive spider, rather than Peter Parker. Peter desperately wanted to be as special as Spider-Woman, and transformed himself into a lizard-like creature in an experiment gone terribly wrong. Parker was killed in the aftermath, and Gwen Stacy vowed to fight in Peter’s memory. When confronted by her father, she had this to say:

You’re a good cop, dad. You put on that badge and carry that gun because you know if you don’t someone who shouldn’t will. When I put on this mask, I only did it– –because it freed me from responsibility. I thought I was special. And Peter Parker died because he tried to follow my example. I have to take responsibility for that. To make his death mean something. But I can’t do it in a jail cell. This mask is my badge now. If I don’t define what it means… monsters like this will. This is where I’m needed most.”

Enjoy Spider-Gwen!

I see issues with this write-up.

While you gave her swingline, you didn’t actually give her webs as a power. When she uses SFX Webshooters to create web related assets, how exactly is she doing that?

Also, swingline can’t be used along with her strength or refexes here because they’re part of the same power set.

I would have given her two power sets, one with her physical abilities, and spider-sense, and one with webs, and swingline.

Finally, I would’ve renamed Second Wind ‘Feel The Beat’, or ‘Focus on The Rhythm’, to represent her drumming skill, and the scene where she tapped into that skill to overcome her opponent.

You make some really good points. I like the rewording of her SFX. It adds a bit of a unique flavor to her character. As for the trouble with her Power Sets, I agree with what you’re saying, although I’m not quite too sure the best way to solve it. I’m woefully not knowledgable about this new character and her powers. If her powers are similar to how Spider-Man’s original where he did not have the ability to spin webs, she definitely needs a WEB SHOOTERS Power Set. However, Spider-Man did go through a phase where he got some more spider-powers. If that’s the case with Gwen, then she should be given a Multipower SFX so she can access her Strength and a Reflexes when using her webs.

Excellent feedback, Adam! Thanks for your input!

No problem and thank you for the work you put in. The graphics alone are amazing. It looks like something from the official products every time.

I know very little about this character myself, although not for lack of investigating. She is so new, and has made so few actual appearances thus far, that there isn’t much information to be had.

That said, I totally fell for her. I love her attitude, her look, her story, everything.

So glad you decided to cover Spider-verse! Can’t wait to see more.

        Happy New Year!

I think the one powerset doesn’t work as well. The web ability needs to be on it’s own. That webbing powerset represented what he could do with it, the Durability in it was about him making a web shield. The way it’s lumped in here it just looks like she is just tough.
