EXCELSIOR, TRUE BELIEVERS!
Marvel Plot Points is back! Thanks to Seamus, one of our longest-serving writers, the team has reassembled to create a brand new event. We’re tackling X-Men ’97, starting on the release day of the final episode, this Wednesday.
We’ve got a HUGE list of Datafiles ready to go, both heroes and villains. We’ve got some event scenes planned as well, seeing how we can depict how exactly we can envision scenes straight from the show. The datafiles are both new and also modified from previous datafiles we’ve done to match the show, all in matching layouts.
We’ll of course be kicking everything off with the team leader, Cyclops.
After the event is over, we don’t want to promise anything more, but a few of our writers have been working on some new events that may be showing up here. In addition, we want to flesh out the animated series lineup with more heroes and villains, so we are looking at revisiting all of that.
But until then, TO ME, MY X-MEN!
Two weeks ago, I ran X-Men ’97 at my local con, and it was so much fun! I hadn’t run MHRP in a while, and I was a little worried about competition by that other Marvel game. However, I had a full table of great players, and they were such good role players!
While I ran three games at the con, I prepped the least for this one, because, as many of you know, MHRP is so easy to run on the fly. I knew I wanted to start in media res saving Roberto from the FOH, but beyond that, my only notes were summaries of the episodes. I allowed the players to drive the story, but they were so good at picking up clues, we basically played through the first episode of the show.
The player of Rogue was great, immediately building up tension with Magneto at first sight of him. And the player of Forge cleverly stole a Sentinel blaster in order to not only track the technology, but also to come up with an EMP defensive weapon. This led them to the Sahara and Master Mold, where Forge successfully caused his EMP blaster to overload and do significant damage to Master Mold. Rogue then followed up with a flying punch to deliver the coup de grâce!
I’m running this again next week, for my local gaming group, since it’s in the can and was so much fun–I want to share it with more people. I do have some questions I hope you can address. First, when I printed the datafiles, the blue background didn’t print. I had to use the printer friendly versions, because with the text being white, it was illegible without the blue background. Is there a workaround or fix for this? Also, I was hoping a few more datafiles and scenes would be available before the convention. Are there plans to release more material for X-Men ’97? I certainly hope so, because what’s been done so far is fantastic for what I think is still a great superhero RPG! To me, my X-Men.
